ABOUT THE MID-OHIO VALLEY
The Mid-Ohio Valley offers rolling hills, nearby mountains, scenic rivers and spacious farmland, but is within easy driving distance of Pittsburgh, Columbus, Cleveland and Washington, D.C. The Mid-Ohio Valley’s communities have retained their wonderful small-town flavor despite the region’s growth over the past 20 years.
Housing costs in the area range from under $40,000 to $400,000, with the average home listing in the $150,000 range. There is a wide variety of styles and price ranges from which to choose, with many listed on the National Historic Register.
The Valley’s educational system is considered one of the best in the state. Schools are linked to area businesses through Partners in Education. This was designed to bring area business people into the schools to work directly with teachers and administrators to supplement classroom studies with relevant learning experiences and to give students a realistic picture of the business world. In addition to excellent grade schools, middle schools and high schools, West Virginia University at Parkersburg serves the Mid-Ohio Valley as its largest higher education center providing academic, career and community service programs, as well as technical training.
Recreational facilities include historic Blennerhassett Island, featuring stern wheeler boat rides down the beautiful Ohio River, and guided tours of the Blennerhassett mansion and the Island’s 500 acres. Other parks offer fishing, walking trails, running areas, tennis and volleyball courts, water slides, swimming, and a wildlife refuge.
Other attractions include the WV Motor Speedway, the Blennerhassett Museum, and the Parkersburg Homecoming Half-Marathon. Parkersburg has an excellent Art Center and Actor’s Guild, along with many art festivals and fairs.
The area prides itself on the quality of life here, its abundance of fine real estate, friendly neighborhoods and community spirit.
